Where are the Arabs? (2009)

Performance and video interventions in public spaces

~25mins

‘Where are the Arabs?’  investigates the collective Arab identity and the publics' connection with notions of a collctive Arab identity, through a speech based on public addresses given by Eygpts' ex-president Gamal Abdul Nasser - an iconic and contested figure in the United Arab Republic project of the 1950's. Performed as an intervention on television screens in restaurants and cafes, as well as a live intervention in various public spaces. The performance confronts idealized histories within the political complexities of contemporary Arab realities.

Video performance and documentation shown in MoMa PS1 (2014), Darat Al Funun, the Khalid Shoman Foundation 2013, Abu Dhabi - Saadiyat for 'Disorientation II" (2010),
