In this video piece Hijawi explores the different perspectives of nostalgia and beauty projected onto the landscape of Palestine, from across the Dead Sea Valley in Jordan. The piece confronts the romanticized gaze projected onto the landscape. It could be the gaze of the passing tourist who sees a ‘holy land’. Or the gaze of people who are not allowed to visit or return to Palestine, and grew up with its images and stories of resistance. The poetic text repeatedly collages an alternative image onto the landscape. The piece explores repetition in language, questioning it as a power for resistance, or if the act of reiteration produces its own failure.
